Relatives on my mother's side are buried in Durr Cemetery. I have been up
there a few times recently to try to figure out what was what. I have
relatives from her side buried all over Bond county but I started with Durr.
Turns out the headstones had so much growth on them, they were nearly
impossible to read. I read up about how to clean and not do any damage. I
tried some of those suggestions and made some progress but not enough.
Finally I broke down and ordered a gallon of D/2, the cleaner guaranteed to
do a better job of cleaning tombstones. It does work pretty well.
One big error I saw [above] was William Porter Brown, known I guess as
W.P.... he was listed as J.P Brown. Wrong. I knew it was him when i read the
dates. 1805 to 1877. Too big of a coincidence, buried with several
relatives, etc. I have cleaned his stone pretty well. It takes hours to
clean them. I spent a few hours there and then I had to just give up and go
back another day. I'm sending a new photo of the grave of William Porter
Brown.
His wife, Mary, is buried there too but she died 20 years before he did.
He died 1877. She died 1857. To the left of her graves is son, Joseph. To
the right is John F. and Phoebe Susan. W. P.'s mother, Susanna, and father,
Joseph, are buried there also. Next to Mary (their mom) are John F. (age
18), Joseph P. (age 14), and Susan. Susan must've been named Phoebe Susan
but went by Susan on all the documents. However on the tombstone it lists
her as Phebe S. (misspelled Phoebe).
Note that John and Susan died 2 weeks apart. How devastating for the family.
Both young. Joseph P died first in 1847. Then Mary in 1857. I suppose if she
was ill and suspected she was dying, she may have said to bury her by
Joseph. Then in May 1864, John and Susan died. They were buried on the other
side of Mary.
On the ILGenWeb site for Durr Cemetery, there are 4 unknown markers. I
believe #3 is Susanna Brown. When I found her grave a month ago. I could
barely tell what it said. It's been cleaned 3-4 times since then and now is
more clear. You can see what you think. [#3 "unknown" photo has been removed

When Mary Brown died, she left 10 children. She was 44. Nancy the oldest was
about 17. The youngest was 5. She stayed at home and raised her siblings it
appears. She did not marry till she was about 30. She is buried in Elm
Point. She married a man named Ezra Wood.
Sorry about Mary Brown's photo. It's not great but that tombstone is tilting
forward and you have to about lie on the ground to try to take the picture.
I wish I knew who oversees Durr Cemetery. But would they intervene to keep
it from falling flat? I cannot budge it to move it back into place. I am
sure it will fall forward at some point. Sadly.
