I'm My Own Grandpa
I [Michael Hubbard] first heard this song when I took my family out west several years ago. We bought a cassette tape by the Flying W Wranglers. My boys (ages 10 and 8) and my niece (age 7) thought that it was so funny that they sang it all the way home. When I contacted the Wranglers to see if I could use the words they told me that they had found the song on a 1940's Homer and Jethro album.
I have since found out that the song was actually written by Dwight B. Latham and Moe Jaffe in the 1930's. They got the idea from a book of Mark Twain's anecdotes. The song was made into a hit by Lonzo and Oscar. Later Homer and Jethro put it onto one of their albums.
So here's to Mark Twain, Latham and Jaffe, Lonzo and Oscar, and Homer and Jethro. They were a few years ahead of their time on "genealogy humor".
I'M MY OWN GRANDPANow many, many years ago when I was just twenty three I was married to a widow and she was as pretty as could be. Now this widow had a grownup daughter who had hair of red And my father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed. Well this made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life, My daughter was my mother because she was my father's wife. And to complicate the matter even though it brought me joy I soon became the father of a bouncin' baby boy. But my little baby, he then became a brother-in-law to dad Well that made him my uncle and it made me very sad Because if he was my uncle then he also was a brother Too the widows grownup daughter who of course was my stepmother I'm my own grandpa I'm my own grandpa It sounds funny I know But it really is so Oh I'm my own grandpa. Well father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run And of course he became my grandchild cause he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mothers, mother and that makes me blue Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too. I'm my own grandpa I'm my own grandpa It sounds funny I know But it really is so Oh I'm my own grandpa. Now if my wife is my grandmother well then I'm her grandchild Every time that I think about this it nearly drives me wild Because now I have become the strangest case you ever saw As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.
